What are Google AI Overviews?

Search Google for certain questions and you'll see a paragraph of AI-generated text sitting above the usual list of links, with a handful of cited sources next to it. That's an AI Overview — Google's answer, built before you get to the results you're used to.

An AI Overview is a summary generated by Google, drawing on a small set of web pages, with links to those sources shown alongside or within the text. It appears above the organic results, not instead of them — the normal list is still there underneath, ten links and all. But the Overview is the first thing most people read, and for a question that's already been answered in full, often the only thing they read before moving on.

When they appear

Not every search triggers one. Overviews show up most often for informational, question-shaped queries — "how does X work", "best way to do Y" — rather than for straightforward navigational or transactional searches, where people already know roughly which site they want. You cannot predict with certainty which of your terms will trigger one; it depends on the exact wording of the query, and Google changes when and where it shows them without much notice. The only way to know is to check the queries that matter to you, and keep checking.

What they mean for clicks

When the Overview answers the question directly, plenty of searchers never scroll further. The click that used to go to whichever site ranked first now, for many queries, doesn't happen at all — the Overview has already answered it in place, on the page, without anyone needing to leave Google. Being cited inside the Overview is the closest thing left to position one: it's the mention that survives even when the click doesn't.

How to see if you appear

You cannot check this at scale by hand. Overviews vary by exact query wording, by location and by time, so a single search from your own browser tells you almost nothing about your overall standing — you might see one thing and a customer searching an hour later sees another. Referenced captures live Google results for the questions that matter to your market and records both the Overview text and every link it cites, so you can see whether and where you appear without running the searches yourself, over and over, hoping to catch a representative result.

AI Overviews and your analytics

This is the part that trips people up: clicks that come from an AI Overview arrive in GA4 tagged as ordinary google/organic traffic, identical to a click from the regular results list below it. There is no separate channel to filter by, and no way to tell from GA4 alone whether a visit came via the Overview or past it. What you can see is impressions in Search Console, which still count when your page is cited in an Overview even if nobody clicks through. Reading your traffic alongside Overview tracking is how you connect the two — a page gaining impressions without matching clicks is often a sign it's being cited rather than clicked, which is a different problem to solve than a page that simply isn't ranking.
